Let It Go Already

At the moment I have Friday’s off with Asher. Lately they have tended to be the time we go out grocery shopping. I enjoy grocery shopping with my kids. I find when they are sitting in the cart we tend to talk more than we would if we were just kicking around home. Plus everyone I see flash nice smiles my way because I am out with the kids.

I know, I know it is a little condescending getting all the ‘good for you’ nods and smiles from people. But I think they are given from a positive place so I choose to receive them positively. And really who can avoid smiling at this fella;

Asher Shopping

If you are wondering the dirt on his face is the chocolate chip cookie he just finished eating. Sobey’s gives them out for free to kids. I am always surprised when I met parents that don’t know that.

As Asher and I finished up our most recent shopping trip and we started to head toward the check out my eyes locked on yet another Elsa, Anna, and Olaf display.

This is what we saw;

Let It GoFirst off we really like Frozen in our house. I have long lost count on the amount of times I have watched the movie, and I have no idea how many Frozen products are in our house. But I am going to go on record here and say this is just plain lazy.

Disney you have made billions of dollars on Frozen. Heck you made billions of dollars on the movie alone. I can’t even fathom how much money you have made in merchandise. But come on now this is too much.

Frosted Cheerios are already a thing. You haven’t done anything here other than change the package. And your soft baked Olaf cookies looks like something I should see on a ‘pin-fail’ website.

Now I am not above buy specialty products to make my kids happy. My parents bought me every Ninja Turtle, Transformer or Spider-man themed snack that was ever produced. And I am willing to return the favor to my kids so long as the product puts in the effort.

Disney, General Mills and Betty Crocker, this is a cash grab and you know it. It would not have taken a lot on your part to make the Cheerios look like snow flakes, or to make a cookie that actually looked like Olaf instead of three cookies you just smooched together by mistake .

You didn’t get me to let go of my money, and you need to let go of this lazy marketing.

Two Weeks With My Philips Sonicare

A few weeks ago I was given a Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum toothbrush to test drive and review. Off the top I have to say the thing is pretty impressive. Most of my life I have used a good old fashioned manual toothbrush, and once I owned a electric toothbrush. And by electric I mean the kind that vibrates a little but has no ability to be charged and you can’t change the battery.

So needless to say my new Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum is the most high tech teeth cleaning device I have ever used without direct dentist supervision. Not that I would need any supervision to use it. It’s pretty easy to use.

The Philips Sonicare is packed with features like; Interchangeable brushes, a UV light that kills 99% of germs, 5 different cleaning modes, and a rechargeable battery that lasts for around 3 weeks and a lot more. Like I said it is the most high tech teeth cleaning device I have ever used.

But all the high techiness isn’t the question you wonder about when you decide to get a new toothbrush. You want to know about function. You want to know if it will in short, work. The Philips Sonicare comes with some detailed instructions on how to optimally use your brush. Basicly over the course of a 2 minute brushing you will hear and feel a change of vibration that is instructing you to brush different teeth. You are supposed to think of your teeth in different sections; top front, top back, top….um top (you know the part of your teeth that does all the chewing), bottom front, bottom back, bottom top. Start with one and each time the indicator goes off change to another one. When the Philips Sonicare shuts off you know that you are done.

That is the correct way to use you Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum. I tried to follow the instructions perfectly for my first few days using it. But I am so used to just brushing that I found it difficult to do so. So after I  realized I was doing a lousy job at following the prompts of my Sonicare I decided I would ignore them and see what the non-optimal results would look like.

Because lets be honest who really likes being bossed around by our electronic devices even when they are right? I don’t press the popcorn button on my microwave, I don’t set the timer on my stove, and I apparently can’t listen to the promptings of my high tech Sonicare. I suspect I am not alone.

After two weeks of using my  Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum non-optimally I am incredibly impressed. My teeth constantly feel like I just had them cleaned by the dental hygienist. And as a mostly reformed poor dental hygiene guy, and a fairly dedicated coffee drinker I can’t get over how much whiter my teeth are starting to look. The Sonicare is removing stains that I forgot were stains, I just thought they were the way my teeth looked now.

With these non-optimal results I have to tell you I am seriously considering reforming my policy of not being bossed around by an electronic. After only two weeks I am considering booking my dental check up earily. I want to hear the heaps of praise I will finally get from my dental hygienist and dentist.

By the way I swear my toothbrush cup isn’t filthy, it is just really tarnished!

Amore Earth’s Own- Review

Almond milk has been popping up in a lot of stores lately. Meghan has on more than one occasion suggested that we ought to give it a try. I admittedly have been somewhat resistant. But when the good folks at Amore Earth’s Own asked if I wanted to give their Almond + Dairy a try I said  ‘yes’.

On the side of the Amore Almond + Dairy carton there is a list of all the things this drink can be used for. They are; By the Glass, In Coffee, In Cereal, In Smoothies, In Baking.

AmoreI figured if I was going to give a review I might as well give a comprehensive review. We tried all five suggested uses. Here is the break down;

As A Drink– I am not sure what I was expecting almond + dairy to taste like. I guess I expected that it would either a) taste like almonds or b) taste like milk. It doesn’t really taste like either. I was surprised to find how sweet and creamy it was. Right out of the cartoon into a glass was a hit with my family. Simeon and Ariella were all ‘yums’.

In Coffee- After drinking Amore straight I was a little nervous about putting it in my coffee. I gave up sweetening my coffee a little more than a year ago and I have moved from cream to whole milk. Amore seemed creamier and sweeter than the milk I was used to putting in. I was surprised. Amore has a lower fat content than whole milk so my coffee was less creamy than I had expected, and the sweetness didn’t really translate. All and all I would say Amore made a fine coffee additive but it didn’t add the flavor I thought it would.

In Cereal– I used Amore with my morning cereal. It is a flake cereal with dried strawberries. The Amore added a very nice very rich flavor. I noticed the sweetness of Amore right away and my first thought was ‘Amore would be a great substitute to adding sugar to cereals.’ As a kid I always loaded load the sugar on my Rice Krispies, with Amore Almond+Dairy I wouldn’t have needed too.

4. In Smoothies- I am always looking to jazz up the taste of our smoothies. I was ready for my smoothie to be rocked with Almond Dairy goodness. Instead I ended up with a very subtle flavor that struggled to compete against the powerful flavors of banana and blueberry. We normally sweeten our smoothies with honey but Amore was all the sweetness it needed. I would definitely add this to my smoothies again.

amore 35. In Baking- Since we were going to have smoothies I figured we might as well have crepes too. I used an old family favorite crepe recipe and subbed out regular milk for Amore. The crepes came out great and tasted very good. Again like the coffee and smoothies the taste change was quite subtle but a good one. We ate up every crepe and were happy with our experiment.

Amore 2In Conclusion– After trying all five of Amore Earth’s Own’s suggested usage for Almond + Dairy I agree with them. They are all good uses of Amore. My personal favorite is on my cereal followed by in a smoothie. If you have been curious about trying almond and dairy beverage Amore Earth’s Own Almond + Dairy is a great product to try. You can check them out here on their website, and here on their Facebook page. If you are interested in trying out Amore I have a one free to give away. Comment on this blog, of share it via Facebook/Twitter for an entry. I will announce a winner Friday afternoon.
