What Is Love?

With Valentine’s Day coming up I have been thinking about an important question, What is love? That question produces two automatic responses in my mind.

One is my pastor answer. What is love? ‘This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.’ 1 John 3:16-18

But I have been thinking lately. Maybe neither of these answers are really my answer to the question what is love? I think the answer to the question what is love for me is better found here;

I really love pizza. I could eat it pretty much everyday, and most weeks I end up eating it two or three times. But I am kind of particular over the pizza I like. My current favourite pizza is a Canadian Pizza. This bad boy is normally made with pepperoni, crumbled bacon, mushrooms and a sweetened sauce with mozzarella cheese. I hate mushrooms, so I always leave those off and double down on the bacon. A slice of this bad boy with some garlic fingers and donair sauce (it’s a Canadian East Coast thing don’t judge me) and I am in heaven. The problem I face, or rather the two problems I face is a) Meghan and the kids don’t really like this pizza they prefer Hawaiian which I barely can tolerate. And b) I think buying two medium pizza’s instead of one large pizza for our household is a waste of money.

Normally when you have a disagreement over pizza toppings you simply go half and half. But the power of the Canadian Pizza is in its distinctive sauce. And that is what my family dislikes about it. My love for them compels me to do what I would have considered unthinkable a few years ago, I have largely abandoned my Canadian Pizza and eat Hawaiian Pizza instead.

I thought I would try something new, Naan Bread Hawaiian Pizza

What is love? In my house love is putting down your desires and picking up the desires of your family. That looks like dozens of different things each day for each of us. For me on Tuesdays it means maintaining a smile as I eat pineapple on my pizza while Simeon and Ariella declare that this is our favorite pizza.

  1. yum, they both sound delicious! Love in this house is everyone in one room playing together without electronic devices and no screaming or arguing between the kids. Although half the time the screaming includes my husband playing with them, but I suppose that is love too 😉

  2. Oh my goodness. I do not love my family enough to eat pineapple on my pizza. No siree. (Though, we’re a big fan of the 2 medium pizzas… which is good because my kids can sometimes eat a whole pizza themselves. Boys. And also, I don’t think I’ll ever need to prove my love by eating a pineapple pizza).

  3. I love Hawaiian pizza! I don’t eat much red meat, so the Canadian bacon (or apparently as you guys call it ‘back bacon’) and pineapple is perfect!
    I guess love for me would be sharing. I hate to share. Being the oldest I always had to share, so when I grew up, it was nice to have something that was “MINE”. then I had Mr. T, and nothing was ever MINE anymore. and that was okay. I can share with him, and i can share with others in my life.
    Great post!

But What Do You Think?
